We use tennis size / fields/ gardens for Ground Loops at 1.5m or trenches down to 2m depth. If limited space we sub-contract and bore the holes down to 150m depth - its just more expensive. Access can be to water whether river or lake and is very efficient offering a coefficient performance of 5Kw energy for each 1Kw of electricity. The earth delivers “x” watts per metre, of energy, which we size to your house and the pump (GSHP) requirement. Each soil group offers higher and lower thermal conductivity. As part of our survey, we use an independent Geological report to assess your soil type.
As an example/guide only, an 300m2 average insulated property could require a Ground Loop of 600m2 ( 20m x 30m or 15m x 40m - flexible); or a trench of 160m.
